Brazilian Power Blackout Leaves Millions in the Dark

Latin Capital Market

A major electricity outage at the Itaipu hydroelectric dam, the world's largest operational electricity generator on the border with Paraguay, left tens of millions of people in Brazil's two largest cities of Sao Paulo and Rio De Janeiro without power.

This blackout will certainly put the spotlight on Brazil's power grid and what needs the country has for the future. In the short term expect some challenges for Electrobras (NYSE:EBR), the ulitity that operates the Itaipu dam. Positively, this will ultimately lead to EBR becoming more efficient, a real plus for shareholders.

Here's the latest trading alert. Banco Santander Brasil (NYSE:BSBR) is being added to the Latin Capital Market Stock Index.
