Water is the new oil.
Legendary petroleum investor T. Boone Pickens has diverted some of his attention from "black gold" to "blue gold" investments. He's acquired water rights to aquifers in the southwest United States and now owns more water than any individual in the nation.
What's he seeing that the normal investor isn't? No less an authority than the World Health Organization estimates that, worldwide, $1 spent on water and sanitation can bring economic benefits averaging between $7 and $12. That's the kind of BIG money that attracts this BIG oil giant.
Last month I redirected our investment posture to a decidedly more defensive stance. Among the equity positions on the recommended list since then has been a company in an industry that arguably represents the ultimate "consumer staple" investment: WATER.
