VALE - Companhia Vale do Rio Doce
Companhia Vale do Rio Doce (NYSE:VALE) produces and sells iron ore, pellets, manganese, alloys, gold, nickel, copper, kaolin, bauxite, alumina, aluminum, and potash. The company is based in Brazil, where it also owns and operates railroads and maritime terminals. It is the largest producer of iron ore and it is the second largest producer of nickel, after Norilsk Nickel, of Russia.

Vale's profit hits a record, miner plans new growth.Vale, the world's largest producer and exporter of iron ore and iron pellets, reported overnight a record third-quarter net profit of $US6.04 billion, more than triple the $US1.68bn of a year earlier, as "vigorous recovery" in the global economy after the end of the recession in mid-2009 boosted minerals and metals demand.
